The brand-new Apple iPhone 11 was revealed worldwide yesterday in California roughly around midnight our time. Apple fans have been waiting with bated breath for a while now since the announcement of the event.
Personally, I’m lukewarm towards Apple products. But they are usually the leader of the group and whatever Apple does, there will be brands following suit.
In the event, they showcased not one or two but three new iPhones coming out very soon. How soon? In fact, it will be available locally on the 27th of September.
The three new phones announced are the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max (luckily they’re not going for roman numerals like what they did with the iPhone X).
So, here’s a list of what you can expect from the new iPhone 11.
1. Same Ol’ Tired Design
We have to talk about the elephant in the room. Apple is obviously sticking with the same design philosophy they’ve been using since the iPhone X. While it is not a crime to stick with the same design (don’t fix what isn’t broken), I would personally prefer a brand-new design.
You still have your rounded corners, the same button placements and the notch remains unchanged. Other brands in the mobile market have slowly transitioned away from the massive notch, but Apple is making a stand there. The only change they have added is with the camera setup.
2. New Camera Setup
As mentioned, the new camera setup is one of the major changes to the iPhone 11 series (the other being the size). The iPhone 11 comes with a dual rear camera setup with a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera.
The Pro versions are equipped with an additional 12-megapixel telephoto camera (and some people have noted that the triple camera setup does look fairly similar to a fidget spinner). The keynote event showcased a ton of videos and images, so undoubtedly, Apple’s focus is on the new cameras.
3. Larger Display & Better Chip
The iPhone 11 series come in three sizes: iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.
The display sizes are also slightly different between the three but weirdly, the iPhone 11 Pro is the smallest amongst the bunch with a 5.8-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display, while the iPhone 11 is equipped with a 6.1-inch LCD Liquid Retina HD Display and the iPhone 11 Pro Max is obviously the largest of the bunch, with a 6.5-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display.
All three phones are also powered with the latest A13 Bionic chip.
4. Faster Charging
Before you rejoice, Apple is still using its proprietary Lightning connector to charge your device. But only specific to the Pro versions, you can find a USB-C Power Adapter and a USB-C to Lightning cable to fast charge your device. According to Apple, it can charge up to 50% in just 30 minutes with the new 18W charger.
5. Better Battery
Depending on the device, Apple is quoting an extra 5-hour battery on the iPhone 11 Pro Max compared to the iPhone Xs Max and to me, that is a pretty hefty claim!
But of course, longer battery life is always desired. As for the iPhone 11 Pro, it can last 4 hours longer compared to the iPhone Xs. While the normal iPhone 11 is quoted to have an additional 1 hour of battery life compared to the iPhone XR.
You have your usual colour variants of Gold, Space Grey and Silver, but the Pro versions will be getting a new variant dubbed Midnight Green. As for the non-pro version, you have a few more colours to choose from, namely: Black, Green, Yellow, Purple, White and Red.
Luckily, the official pricing for the iPhone 11 series is already out and while it does look fairly inviting, there are more sinister intentions behind the curtain.
The iPhone 11 starts at RM3,399 for the 64GB version, RM3,599 (128GB) and RM4,099 for the 256GB version.
As for the Pro versions, the iPhone 11 Pro starts at RM4,899 for the 64GB version, RM5,599 for the 256GB version and a whopping RM6,499 for the 512GB version.
Last but not least, we have the iPhone 11 Pro Max. It starts at RM5, 299 for the 64GB, RM5, 999 for the 256GB version and tops it at RM6, 899 for the 512GB version.
It’s a little disheartening because other devices such as the Note10+ starts with a 256GB internal storage and if you pre-ordered it, you get a free upgrade to 512GB. Yet, Apple is pulling a fast one on their customers.
Despite all that, if you’re still interested in getting your hands on one of the new iPhones, you can get them on the 27th of September. Local telcos have yet to announce their pricing plans for the phones, but we expect we might see various packages and offers popping up soon.
